Neil Strauss - world famous pick up artist, pop culture writer, contributor to Rolling Stone, and self-help author - has recently started something that is...well...very academic. I think all his stuff is very academic (I've been known to reference strategic psychological anecdotes from Neil's pick up artist book The Game during staff meetings); however, I think this is current venture of his is more classically academic.
In short, Neil is challenging his fans to read James Joyce's Ulysses, a modern stream-of-consciousness version of Homer's epic The Odyssey, and call into weekly book discussions about the novel. I was actually doing this for a while, and by 'a while' I mean two weeks. I made it through the first section of the book entitled The Telemachiad, but quickly lost my stomach for James Joyce fifty pages in. Not the easiest thing to read.
That said, I would encourage any real brain busters out there to read the book and consider joining Neil's group. After reading just a portion of Ulysses, I consider reading the entire thing from start to finish is on par with...say solo rowing the Atlantic in a canoe. A once in a lifetime feat. Why not get some support while you're undertaking the journey?
